Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Maharashtra on December 18 has launched infrastructure and housing projects worth Rs 41,000 crore. Modi first visited Mumbai, where he launched the City and Industrial Development Corporation’s (CIDCO) mass housing scheme worth Rs 18,000 crore. The scheme, being launched under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), will have 89,771 affordable homes up for sale.
The PM, during his visit to the financial capital, also laid the foundation of two Mumbai Metro routes – the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan route of the Metro-5 and the Dahisar-Mira Bhayander route of the Metro-9 at Kalyan.
The Metro-5 corridor, which was approved in October last year, is a 24.9-km route to be constructed at a cost of Rs 8,416-crore. Once completed 2022, over 2.20 lakh commuters are expected to travel on this six-coach route daily. There will be 17 stations on this elevated stretch. On the other hand, the Dahisar-Mira Bhayander route will be a 10.3-km elevated route with eight stations. With an estimated cost of Rs 6,607 crore, the project is expected to become operational in 2022.
The PM later visited the cultural capital Pune, where he laid the foundation stone of a new Metro route in the city. This third route will run between Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar. The Rs 8,313-crore 23-km third Metro route is expected to connect the information technology region of the city.
