Indore Bags Govt’s Cleanest City Award For The 4th Time

Madhya Pradesh’s Indore, with over 10 lakh residents, continues to be the cleanest city in India, the government’s cleanliness survey announced on December 31, 2019, shows. This is the fourth time the city has managed to retain the top ranking. The results are of the Swachh Survekshan League 2020, conducted in the first quarter (April and June 2019) and the second quarter (July to September 2019).
While Bhopal got the second ranking in the first quarter at the index, Gujarat’s Rajkot grabbed the spot in the second quarter. Similarly, Surat and Navi Mumbai were ranked third in the index in Q1 and Q2, respectively. In both quarters, Kolkata stood at the bottom of the index in the category of cities with over 10 lakh population.
In another category that analyses cleanliness in cities with a population between 1 and 10 lakh, Jharkhand’s Jamshedpur, the national capital’s New Delhi Municipal Corporation areas and Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur have been ranked first, second and third, respectively, in Q1. In Q2, the second and third positions are grabbed by Chandrapur in Maharashtra and Khargone in Madhya Pradesh while Jamshedpur continued to hold on to the top spot.
Among cantonment boards, Tamil Nadu’s St. Thomas, UP’s Jansi and the national capital’s Delhi Cantt were ranked the top three cleanest areas in Q1. In Q2, the Delhi Cantonment area obtained the top position while Jalandhar occupied the third spot. Jansi continued with its place on the second spot.
